Day one of charring

We'd planned for it to take a weekend. It took six. The chimney we built for the shou sugi ban burn never quite drew right, and the first three panels came out unevenly — patches where the surface had cooked too hot, others where it had barely caught.

On the seventh panel we got the technique right, and from then on it was a steady rhythm.
